Searching For A Virtual Pet

I just spent some time looking for that online to no success. Jaguar is just too much of a sour puss for me. Alas it wasn't that successful, but thankful Neko is still available. It is a virtual pet I had a few years ago and rediscovered. You can't feed or play with it, but its free and a quick download.

1) Go to their website and download Neko 4.0 and the cat sounds.

2) Unzip Neko984.zip into its own folder. I used C:\Neko. Unzip the sounds also. I placed it at C:\Neko\Sounds

3) Start Neko and watch your electronic feline fiend chase... what else?... your mouse cursor. Note that a Neko icon is in your taskbar, which is usually by the desktop clock.

4) By using NekoCFG or by right clicking the Neko icon and choosing settings, you can configure your Neko. I usually have two of them, the second named Neka. Here is my configuration.
  • Display: 133% scale for 800x600 resolution. Note the 'Always On Top' checkbox in case your e-cat is getting in the way!
  • Movement: Unchanged
  • Sound: Neko has sound close but not at 'None'. Neka none. I found 'some' means a lot. You also need to set the 5 cat sounds here!
  • Independence: I make Neka run around randomly.
5) Finally, you might want to add a shortcut somewhere, i.e. desktop, start menu.

To stop Neko, right click the icon and choose exit. Neither I nor the Neko programmer is responsible for any scratches Neko does to your desktop! He does sharpen his claws when near the edge of the screen. Feline fiend!

This thing is annoying! It cat sounds are unrealistic, purrs way too loud, and worst yet I can't catch it on the screen! Download a virtual fish tank instead!

Jaguar, Brian's master
